In Uganda legal fees are calculated according to the Advocates Act (No. 22 of 1970) the Advocates (Remuneration and Taxation of Costs) (Amendment) Rules, (Statutory Instrument no. 3 of 1996). Under these Rules one would elect to charge on percentage basis where the value of the subject matter can be ascertained in monetary terms. Alternatively, one would elect to charge or calculate fees on an hourly basis.

Our approach is both flexible and transparent but within the confines of the professional rules and regulations . Where permissible by the Rules we negotiate and agree with the client on the appropriate method of calculating fees.

Our rates are inclusive of all over heads and administrative expenses and all taxes payable by Magezi, Ibale & Co. Advocates. Legal firms are subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) on fees at the rate of 18% on the fees.

The charges will not include out of pocket expenses such as travel, accommodation and subsistence allowance out of Kampala, they do not include disbursements like photocopying, production of documents, telephone charges, faxes and government fees.
